In reply to divoxx. I think Matz wanted to deprecate it because it could not be made threadsafe. However, it seems the JRuby guys were able to. I don't know where the proposal to deprecate it stands right now.

Last I heard autoload was basically deprecated. But it won’t be removed for a while, its marked for Ruby 3.0.
